Theme E: Cyber Physical Testbed

The SinBerBEST Cyber Physical Testbed is an invaluable crucible for proposed technological innovations, migrating technologies from concept to robust prototype and eventually to commercialization within a streamlined framework. It is used to verify the in vivo performance, efficiency and effectiveness of technology innovations developed in Themes A through D.

The Testbed offers:

1) the capability to execute real-time operation and control within the regulated indoor environments to support a wide range of research missions.

2) diverse capabilities including a Daylight Emulator, an artificial sky, a fully controlled Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV) test-bed, a Nano-grid, and a Façade Management System;

3) industry participation

Experimental Opportunities and Support in the Community

The final goal is to transition SBB technologies and innovations to the marketplace. After validation at the Cyber Physical Testbed stage, the next stage involves deploying technologies in the field. In this way, technologies will be hardened through exposure to actual real-world uncertain conditions.

    In April 2020, Wired, a monthly American magazine that concentrates on how developing technologies impact culture, the economy, and politics, spotlighted Prof. Spanos and his work to “cut office energy use by half—with the help of artificial intelligence” in Singapore.

    On 19th November 2019, Minister for Social and Family Development & Second Minister for  National Development, Mr Desmond Lee and fellow co-chair Mr Lim Ming Yan, former president and group chief executive office of CapitaLand, along with the FEC BE Cluster Sub-committee members visited the living lab at the Zero Energy Building (ZEB) located in the BCA Braddell Campus.

    In February 2020, the ASHRAE Journal highlighted SinBerBEST’s large-scale, smart technology implementation at BCA’s Zero Energy Building (ZEB.) This living lab is the culmination of a long-standing, research collaboration between SinBerBEST and BCA. 

    Developed from years of SinBerBEST research, innovative building technologies, including hybrid cooling, occupancy positioning, lighting controls, plug load management, and occupant feedback, were deployed as a fully integrated, smart control building system in ZEB, a working office building.
