Lighting Design Strategies beyond the Visual: Alertness and Efficiency

This project evaluates the impact of lighting quality and characteristics on alertness in simulated conditions that replicate spectrally selective glazing coatings, building surface materials, and specific lamp spectral power distributions. The effect is complex in that the physiological effects vary by time of day, length of exposure and exposure history. The outcomes include computational methods, studies of acceptance and alertness in the SinBerBEST testbed, lighting controls systems specific to times of day, and concurrent thermal performance impacts of the new design strategies.
