Nelumbo Wins Berkeley Cleantech University Prize

Nelumbo has developed an omniphobic nanocoating which accelerates water shedding and reduces contaminant build-up on surfaces. We are using our OMNIPHOBE coating in air conditioning systems to raise efficiency by up to 25%. Our coating is 200X thinner than a human hair, conducts heat, and adds less than 2% to the manufacturing cost of an AC unit, allowing for cost-effective universal application on any scale or geometry.

Gouqing Geng, a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, won the Best Student Poster award at the 14th International Congress on the Chemistry of Cement, the most important congress in the cement field. This award was given for his research titled “Multi-technology investigation of the atomic structure of calcium silicate hydrates”.

Min Jin, a graduate student at UC Berkeley, won the Best Paper Award for the paper,  Sensing by Proxy: Occupancy Detection Based on Indoor CO2 Concentration at the Ninth International Conference on Mobile Ubiquitous Computing, Systems, Services and Technologies.

Dr. Ju-hyuk Moon, a former UC Berkeley PhD student supported by SinBerBEST, will be a faculty member at NUS in January 2016.  Upon graduation from Berkeley in 2014, Dr Moon accepted a tenure position at Stony Brooks. As he was always impressed with the dynamism of the research in Singapore, Dr Moon applied for a faculty position at NUS and was selected. This is a clear indication of the strong synergy between Berkeley and NUS/ NTU.

Dr. Kai Ma from NTU has accepted a faculty position as Associate Professor in the Department of Automation within the School of Electrical Engineering at Yanshan University in Qinhuangdao, China. Dr. Ma has worked with Professor Spanos on smart grid research and we congratulate him on his promotion.

We are pleased to announce that Zou Han and Jiang Hao have won the third  place in the Microsoft Indoor Localization Competition - IPSN (Information Processing in Sensor Network) 2014. They are led by Prof. Xie Lihua and Prof. Alexandre Bayen.
