Berkeley Education Alliance for Research in Singapore (BEARS)

The organization is funded by the National Research Foundation of Singapore and directed by Professor Masayoshi Tomizuka. It was launched in 2012 to conduct two major research programs, Singapore-Berkeley Building Efficiency and Sustainability in the Tropics (SinBerBEST,) and Singapore-Berkeley Research Initiative for Sustainable Energy (SinBeRISE.)

SinBerBEST is led by Professor Costas Spanos, and focuses on use-inspired basic research in novel demand side energy and carbon footprint reduction for tropical buildings. SinBeRISE is led by Professor Connie Chang-Hasnain, and explores novel, inexpensive approaches to convert solar energy into electrical energy and to catalyze the conversion of CO2 into liquid fuel cells.
